The trouble with the alarmists is that they don’t seem to realize that people are capable of looking back over what they said before, and judging them by their past record.
Perfect example: In 1982 Mustafa Tolba of the United Nations Environment Program excoriated the world’s governments for failing to institute “ecologically sound management” and warned them, in an “official forecast” that if they didn’t mend their ways,
by the turn of the century, an ecological catastrophe which will witness devastation as complete, as irreversible as any nuclear holocaust

Mustafa tolba went on to become Executive Director for UNEP.

FLASHBACK – July 5, 1989
Well, over 20 years has gone past and the island nations have remained above sea level while some have grown. Co2 levels have continued their upward trend. There is no acceleration in sea level rise. Indications are that sea level rise in 2010 has fallen while global mean temps are forecast to fall in 2011 [Joe Bastardi].

Lol, good one. I’ve read stuff like this, but they’re a bit cannier, as they don’t say when this apocalypse will actually occur, just a threatened deadline for taking action. If you called them on it, they’d say that it will happen, just wait and see – but you’d be waiting for an eternity.

It’s always ‘scenarios’ not predictions and it’s always twenty or more years down the line, isn’t it?
And just look at all the trouble that boils up when we get a bit of a shorter timeline, eg with the IPCC claim that rain fed agriculture in Africa would see yields down by 50% by 2020…
I’m not going to mention the glaciers because that would be childish and vindictive, and anyway it was just a typo, so it’s okay.
I’m old enough to remember this. IIRC, I was very dismissive of these claims but nobody claimed that I was a Holocaust Denier!
