Guardian: Co2 Emissions = Genocide, Capitalist Democracy = Nazism.

I thought the absolute rock bottom had been reached by the San Fransisco Chronicle’s article that global warming caused the Haiti earthquake, but only one day later, The Guardian newspaper manages to sink to new depths . . .

The Guardian newspaper has a column which argues that emitting Co2 is genocide, and equates capitalist democracy with Nazism (it probably makes some kind of sense in bizzaro-world).

The author of the column, Ms Polly Higgins, is a lawyer and activist who campaigns for laws against what she terms ‘ecocide’ – the destruction or degradation of the environment, which she places on a moral par with genocide. Her website, Trees Have Rights, lists some examples of Ecocide:

  • the threatened existence of the low lying Maldives due to rising sea levels;
  • the shrinking of the Greenland ice sheet;
  • the melting of the Himalayan Glaciers;
  • the pacific gyre, the ‘island of garbage twice the size of Texas’, slowly spinning in the ocean. (1)

Although a lawyer, Ms Higgins seems to have a problem grasping the difference between an innocent person being executed by a tyrannical regime, and someone being found guiltt of criminal damage by their peers in an open court. Discussing the recent guilty verdict a jury pronounced on several activists who broke into a coal-fired power station with the intention of shutting it down, she writes:

Sophie Scholl, a Munich University student, was executed for revealing the truth about the activities of the Nazi authorities; today 20 brave Ratcliffe whistleblowers have been sentenced at Nottingham crown court for plotting to draw attention to the truth of the activities of another German entity. This time, replace the tyranny of the Nazis with the tyranny of the energy giant E.ON. (2)

Was Ms Higgins off law college sick on the day they lectured on the idea of proportionality and justice? She doesn’t say. What she does say is that democracy and capitalism are allowing ‘Ecocide’ to take place:

climate campaigners do not have the support of the judiciary in preventing the corporate ecocide that is daily occurring under our very noses. Ecocide is permitted (as genocide was in Nazi Germany) by the government and, by dint of the global reach of modern-day transnational business, every government in the world. (2)

This, according to the Guardian newspaper article, has resulted in the tyranny of democratic capitalism:

Sixty years ago the tyranny was Nazism. Today it is pursuit of profit without moral compass or responsibility. (2)

Say what? Democratic capitalism is a tyranny? Ms Higgins clearly and repeatedly compares capitalist democracy with Nazi Germany. I don’t know about you, but I find this kind of instrumentality deeply repugnant.

At the end of it all, this article is a perfect example of what belief in global warming has done. It has allowed extremists like Ms Higgins to broadcast their fanatical views in what is supposedly a liberal publication. Having tried to label global warming sceptics as ‘deniers’ so as to equate them with holocaust deniers, they now trivialize the wholesale and deliberate, planned slaughter of people in Nazi Germany by equating it with the production of electricity which powers our schools, hospitals and homes.

This is the kind of thinking behind global warming.

  1. How ironic that (yet another) Guardian Polly has a campaign website called ‘Trees Have Rights’ yet she wishes to reduce the amount of life-giving CO2 trees depend on.

  2. I don’t know why, you’d think I’d be inured to it by now, but I am always taken aback by the so-called liberal activist’s mean spiritedness and their self assured holier-than-thou attitude. These are disgusting people.

    ot: there’s still no blog roll visible.

  3. Not new, really, but essentially a regurgitated talking point out of American anti-skeptic book author Ross Gelbspan’s 2004 Boiling Point, where among other things he says skeptic scientists have committed “crimes against humanity” on several occasions, as seen in this search:

    Al Gore said in his review of Gelbspan’s 2004 book that the man’s prior 1997 book, The Heat is On “remains the best, and virtually only, study of how the coal and oil industry has provided financing to a small group of contrarian scientists”……

    So when you click on the embedded link in my name up above and read the articles and blogs I’ve written about Gelbspan and his cronies, an obvious question pops up: if this man is the only one who has made the corruption accusation against skeptic scientists, but is unwilling to show his “smoking gun” evidence to anyone, and other people don’t corroborate his accusation but simply regurgitate it instead, then do we not have a problem of epic proportions with the mainstream media for failing to check the veracity of the entire accusation?

    When that situation is combined with the wildly eroding credibility of the IPCC, what is it that prevents the whole concept of AGW from going into total collapse? I believe only the mainstream media and the uninformed public and policymakers are holding this together, and the populations of the latter two groups are growing smaller by the day.

    Start placing your bets on how soon and how spectacular this wipeout will be.

  4. “Indeed, and every time she breathes, she exhales CO2!”

    No, every time people like this exhale, bullshit and bile come out.

    I wonder how long it will be before the first green activist blows up and airplane?

  5. the pacific gyre, the ‘island of garbage twice the size of Texas’, slowly spinning in the ocean

    Oops. And a day later we’re told

    “Claims that the “Great Garbage Patch” between California and Japan is twice the size of Texas is “grossly exaggerated” said the research which reckons it is more like one per cent the size. ”

  6. Very Good timing

    The garbage ‘twice the size of texa’ in the oceans…

    Telegraph reports today, not true.. just one hundreth…
    ‘Great Garbage Patch’ in the Pacific Ocean not so great claim scientists
    Environmental scientists have been criticised for exaggerating the size of an “island” of plastic waste said to be swirling around in the Pacific Ocean after a study finds that it is 200 times smaller than claimed.

  7. A good post in a great new blog – keep up the good work

  9. Just an aside, because this:
    “Sixty years ago the tyranny was Nazism.”
    shows brilliantly that the Grauniad, the ‘trees have rights’-lawyer and all who applaud this haven’t got a clue – in spite of schooling and university.
    Sixty years ago – as anybody will be able to confirm even without using a calculator, gets us to 1951.
    At that time, WWII was over. These people don’t seem to know that Germany surrendered in 1945 … but hey, they got at least the century right …

    Regarding ‘trees have rights’ – no leftie I’ve ever met grasps the concept that ‘rights’ go hand-in-hand with obligations imposed on those who claim they have rights. That isn’t surprising because our whole culture nowadays is deaf to the concept of obligations and duties. But it would still be interesting what obligations trees have, if they have got ‘rights’. Not to shed their leaves onto our rail network, perhaps?

  10. Forgive me for pointing this out, she’s clearly barking mad, but she doesn’t mention “democratic capitalism”, she talks about Capitalism only. So, don’t put words into her mouth.

  11. The comparison of almost anything with Nazism is usually hyperbole indicating that the argument has already been lost.

    And yes, she’s a nutcase.

  12. Blithering idiots (e.g., Ms Higgins) can be entertaining, but most often they are best locked in a closet where their nattering goes unheard for its meaningless noise.

    It is amazing how many people never check the facts of the warming claims and then go spouting the junk science as if they know it is true. Every aspect of the warming claims can be shown to be false, distorted, or incomplete.

    The simple fact is that, if CO2 could warm the air, it would cause a slight cooling as it would increase water evaporation and convection currents, carrying heat more rapidly to altitude where the heat of condensation would be lost to space.

    Warming the climate by manmade CO2 is also a non-starter as our contribution is inconsequential when the larger estimate of warming by doubling CO2 is 0.01 deg C and we contribute only 3% of the annual CO2 release – translated into thousandths of a deg C. There is simply no effect.

    Only by lying and fabricating a house of cards based on a selection of junk or bad science can the IPCC pretend that CO2 can warm the atmosphere. They rely almost entirely on computer models which are fatally flawed and pretend that they are useful tools. They have no more reliability than science fiction as a science. In science fiction, the needs effects are made up as pseudoscience.

    The idea that polar bears are threatened by current climate changes is pseudoscience, unless increasing one’s population is the new way to become extinct. Just like “green” is the New Nazi “black” of the SS.

  13. A real problem with her argument is that communism had a much greater devastating effect on the environment. Of course, socialist counties of all persuasions also are as bad as capitalist free market economies. In other words there is no economic system that does not use resources.
    Hers is a ivory tower, Noam Chomsky, type of argument that ignores reality.
    The history of humanity shows that if the economic system collapses, war is the result. This would not be good for the environment.

  14. Mao Zedong – China, 1966 to 1971 – Cultural Revolution to advance socialism. Urban workers sent to fields for reorientation. 500,000+ dead.
    Pol Pot – Cambodia, 1976 to 1979 – ‘Cleansing’ of workers with skills and urban lifestyles. 2,000,000+ dead.
    Polly Higgins – UK, 2012 to 2020 – ‘Ecocide purges’. All nuclear, coal-fired and gas power station workers and management flee country. Those remaining face kangaroo courts and are executed or imprisoned. No petrol, no gas to cook. Only wind-powered energy and electric powered cars for the elite. 12,000,000+ dead.
    Thanks but no thanks Polly – it’s been tried before.

  15. Welcome to the blogosphere, HTL …

    This is not the first time that the Guardian has seen fit to favour Higgins’s outrageous and egregiously offensive “campaign”. They also gave her “campaign” some airtime shortly after it was conceived last April:

    Charming, eh?!

    As you quite correctly point out, Higgins’s expropriation – and trivialization – of Sophie and (her brother) Hans Scholl and the White Rose movement they started is completely beyond the pale.

    Perhaps the only bright spot to be found in all this is that it would seem (judging by a post on her recruitment site) that her success in Cancun was [deservedly and decidedly] underwhelming.

  16. Her website, Trees Have Rights, lists some examples of Ecocide:
    * the threatened existence of the low lying Maldives due to rising sea levels;
    * the shrinking of the Greenland ice sheet;
    * the melting of the Himalayan Glaciers;
    * the pacific gyre, the ‘island of garbage twice the size of Texas’, slowly spinning in the ocean.

    Let’s deal with her claims one by one.

    New Scientist – June 2010
    “For years, people have warned that the smallest nations on the planet – island states that barely rise out of the ocean – face being wiped off the map by rising sea levels. Now the first analysis of the data broadly suggests the opposite: most have remained stable over the last 60 years, while some have even grown….During that time, local sea levels have risen by 120 millimetres, or 2 millimetres per year on…

    The dynamic response of reef islands to sea-level rise
    Results contradict existing paradigms of island response and have significant implications for the consideration of island stability under ongoing sea-level rise in the central Pacific. First, islands are geomorphologically persistent features on atoll reef platforms and can increase in island area despite sea-level change.

    Solomon Star – March 5, 2009
    When the sea rises, the atoll rises with it, and when the sea falls, they fall as well.

    The following is an open letter to the president of the Maldives written in 2010 by Dr. Nils-Axel Mörner. His main points were:

    “Let me summarize a few facts.
    (1) In the last 2000 years, sea level has oscillated with 5 peaks reaching 0.6 to 1.2 m above the present sea level.

    (2) From 1790 to 1970 sea level was about 20 cm higher than today

    (3) In the 1970s, sea level fell by about 20 cm to its present level

    (4) Sea level has remained stable for the last 30 years, implying that there are no traces of any alarming on-going sea level rise.

    (5) Therefore, we are able to free the Maldives (and the rest of low-lying coasts and island around the globe) from the condemnation of becoming flooded in the near future.”

    “…glaciologists reported at the American Geophysical Union meeting that Greenland ice’s Armageddon has come to an end.” [January 2009]
    American Geophysical Union

    “Waters from warmer latitudes — or subtropical waters — are reaching Greenland’s glaciers, driving melting…”

    “…the rate of warming in 1920–1930 was about 50% higher than that in 1995–2005.”
    Petr Chylek et. al.

    Glaciers in northern hemisphere partly melting due to soot.
    James Hansen

    Soot could equal up to 60 percent of the current global warming effect of carbon dioxide

    Are all Himalayan glaciers melting?

    Himalayan glaciers ‘melting’ due as much to soot and dust as CO2
